Bruno Fernandes transfer twist as Jose Mourinho gets involved in Manchester United signing saga

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has teased a journalist over whether or not Bruno Fernandes' transfer to Manchester United will happen.

The Special One was addressing the media after his side's 2-1 win over Norwich on Wednesday before he turned the table on the assembled press pack.

Sporting Lisbon star Fernandes is expected to complete a £55m plus add-ons deal in the coming days after weeks of fraught signing talks on both sides.

But a deal has yet to be finalised.

And Mourinho appeared as keen as anyone to find out if the move to bring the Portuguese international to the Premier League was imminent.

He asked: “How was Lisbon? Lisbon was good? So Bruno Fernandes come to United or no?”

“So you go to Lisbon and he’s not coming? But coming or no?”

Tottenham were offered the chance to sign Fernandes last summer but failed to come to terms to bring the in-demand attacking midfielder to North London.

And Mourinho will have been fully aware of his countryman's rise to prominence after his Primeira Liga exploits before he arrived at Spurs.

Manchester United 's need for a signing pick-me-up is stark after consecutive league defeats against Liverpool and Burnley.

The pressure is mounting on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but it's understood the Norwegian retains the backing of the Old Trafford board despite a wretched run of results.

And former star Darren Fletcher admits he is worried about the "toxic atmosphere engulfing his former team.

He said: "The scenes in the stadium weren't good. The chanting, the atmosphere really turned toxic for the first time.

"At the minute you can see with every setback these youngsters are just sinking.

"The scrutiny and the pressure that these kids are under - it was difficult for me coming into the team and I was surrounded by world class players left, right and centre.

"These lads don't have that support network around them and they are really finding it difficult.

"It might make a few of them, but at the same time it will probably break a few of them as well, which is really disappointing."
