Bruno Fernandes to Manchester United latest: Transfer fee, contract - what we know so far

The transfer saga of the January window appears to be drawing to a conclusion, with Manchester United finally set to land Bruno Fernandes.

The Sporting Lisbon midfielder will become Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first signing of the winter window, boosting United's options and offering a genuine goal threat from midfield.

Here's what James Robson knows so far about the state of the deal...

What has changed in the negotiations?

As early as a week ago, the clubs were understood to be 'miles apart' regarding a potential deal.

However, sources insist “significant progress” was made on Tuesday night, though it is understood final figures are still to be confirmed.

The two clubs have agreed a deal which will see United pay Sporting an initial €55million (£46.5m), plus €10m in achievable add-ons.

Another €15m will be payable based on Fernandes’ personal achievements, such as winning the Ballon d’Or.

The Portugal international is set to fly to Manchester on Wednesday for a medical at Carrington, as well as putting the finishing touches to his contract.

The midfielder will sign a four-and-a-half year deal until summer 2024, with the option of a further 12 months.

The nature of the deal is viewed as a 'victory' for United, who refused to meet Sporting’s initial asking price of €80m.

That could have a positive knock-on effect regarding potential pursuits of Leicester's James Maddison and Dortmund's Jadon Sancho.

Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino was a fan of Fernandes while Tottenham boss: should he replace Solskjaer in the not-too-distant future, the deal appears to make sense from that perspective as well.
