Bruno Fernandes tipped to take over as new Man Utd captain

Bruno Fernandes could "certainly" become Manchester United captain in the future, according to one of his old bosses.

The Portuguese star has been a huge hit at United ever since linking up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad in January, and he ended his first season in English football with 12 goals in 22 appearances in all competitions.

Eight of those goals came in the Premier League, while Fernandes also finished as the Europa League's top scorer for the 2019/20 campaign thanks to his eight goals in the tournament for both Sporting Lisbon and United.

Fernandes was the Sporting captain in his final seasons at the club, and his former Udinese manager Andrea Stramaccioni says he has got what it takes to don the armband for United.

“Bruno is a very good boy, a very good person. He is a really hard worker, he’s positive, said Stramaccioni, speaking to Sky Sports, of a player he coached in the 2014/15 season when Udinese finished 16th in Serie A.

“When we were at Udinese he worked a lot and his approach was always positive.

“He can certainly captain Manchester United, he is a really talismanic player. He is loved by the fans, respected by his team-mates – even from opponents.

“To be captain of Manchester United is something really, really important. I hope he will be.

“I think now we don’t need to think about this kind of thing, he has to think about keeping his performance at a high level, as he is doing, and step by step gain the respect of everyone around him – the media, the fans – and continue to keep a high level.”
