Manchester United will be without Bruno Fernandes when they host Burnley at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
The Portuguese midfielder has been handed a one-match ban ahead of the game after picking up his fifth yellow card of the Premier League season during United's 1-1 draw with Newcastle on Monday.
Fernandes, 27, was shown a yellow card in the second-half of the match at St. James' Park after he argued with referee Craig Pawson about a decision.
The former Sporting midfielder played the entirety of the match but endured a torrid time after he lost possession of the ball a staggering 26 times in total.
Premier League rules state any player who earns five bookings from their side's first 19 Premier League matches will serve a one-match ban in the same competition — meaning Fernandes will miss the match at home to Burnley later in the week.
It is also worth noting that players who accumulate 10 yellow cards in Premier League matches up to and including their team's 32nd fixture will serve a two-match suspension in the competition. These yellow cards are not carried over to the EFL Cup or FA Cup.
United have now played 17 matches in the league this season after their draw with Newcastle and still have two games in hand on some rivals following the postponement of festive fixtures against Brentford and Brighton earlier in the month due to a Covid-19 outbreak.
