Bruno Fernandes, Steven Bergwijn and how the Man Utd and Spurs transfer targets rank in Europe

Tottenham Hotspur are in the market for a creative young winger.

Spurs are closing in on the signing of PSV winger Steven Bergwijn, who has been given permission to talk to Tottenham after missing his side's 1-1 draw with FC Twente in the Eredivisie.

He is now expected to agree personal terms and complete a medical ahead of a move, with Tottenham reported to have made a bid of around £30million for the Dutch international.

But just how good is he? And how does he compare to other players in a similar position across Europe.

Everything you need to know about the January transfer window

Well, we have crunched the numbers for one key statistic to see how Bergwijn fares compared to other wingers and attack-minded midfielders.

And it is another player who has been linked with Tottenham who tops the charts as Europe's most creative young player.

That man is Manchester United transfer target Bruno Fernandes, although there are a host of others out there who don't rank too far behind the Sporting midfielder.

Fernandes has made 58 key passes - one that leads to a goalscoring opportunity - for his Sporting teammates in the league so far this season.

Those have come at the rate of one every 24.8 minutes, which is more regularly than any player aged 25 or under who has made more than 10 appearances in Europe’s top leagues outside of England - in France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands and Spain.

RB Leipzig's Christopher Nkunku has a similarly good record, with 37 key passes at the rate of one every 25.2 minutes this season.

Staying in Germany, Bayer Leverkusen’s Nadiem Amiri has averaged one key pass every 28.7 minutes, as has Adama Traoré of French side Metz, although he has just joined Al-Adalah on loan.

Lorenzo Pellegrini has made 42 key passes so far this season for Roma. Those chances have come at the rate of one every 28.9 minutes.

Samu Castillejo has made a key pass once every 29.5 minutes for AC Milan and Mounir Chouiar has created one every 29.6 minutes for Dijon.

Next comes Bergwijn in eighth place, with the Spurs transfer target averaging one key pass every 29.7 minutes for PSV in the Eredivisie.

His team-mate Cody Gakpo has averaged one every 29.8 minutes, and Josip Brekalo has averaged one every 29.9 minutes for Wolfsburg.

They make up the top ten, and we have included the top 20 below.
