Bruno Fernandes took centre-stage for Portugal on Tuesday night as they eased past Azerbaijan 3-0 despite the absence of star striker Cristiano Ronaldo.
Fernandes, who is celebrating his 27th birthday on Wednesday, started the celebrations early when he set-up Bernardo Silva for the opening goal of the match and also played a key role in the build-up to second scored by Andre Silva.
Diogo Jota sealed the victory in the second half as Portugal returned to the top of their World Cup qualifying group thanks to the brilliance of Fernandes in midfield.
Portugal were without Ronaldo for the match due to suspension, who returned early from international duty and took part in his first Manchester United training session since re-joining the club last week.
Ronaldo will be reunited with Fernandes at Carrington in the coming days as the Portuguese duo both eye starring roles in the weekend match against Newcastle at Old Trafford.
In regards to other United involvement it was also a night to remember for the French contingent as Raphael Varane, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial all played a part in their 2-0 victory over Finland.
Antoine Griezmann netted both goals for his national side as Pogba and Varane completed the full 90 minutes while Martial was replaced by Wissam Ben Yedder with 10 minutes left.
Pogba was the unsung hero of the show, ending the match with the most touches of the ball as well as completing 94 per cent of his passes.
