Bruno Fernandes' reaction to Juan Mata contract shows his long-term Man Utd plan

Bruno Fernandes has been reacting to the news that Juan Mata has signed a new one-year contract to keep him at Manchester United until 2022.

The Spaniard was due to become a free agent, with reports suggesting he could call time on his Old Trafford career.

But the 33-year-old has now agreed to terms on a new deal which will see him continue to be a part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad for another season.

Fernandes himself is set to be the next United star to be involved in contract negotiations, despite only arriving at the club 18 months ago.

In that timeframe, he has become the Red Devils' talisman, racking up an astonishing 26 goals and 18 assists in the Premier League alone.

After agreeing to the £72.9million transfer of Jadon Sancho, all eyes now turn back to Fernandes in order to ensure his head is not turned.

The former Sporting star has made it perfectly clear that his overarching ambition is to win silverware as United’s drought extended to four years following their Europa League final defeat.

“We come to this club because we want to win trophies,” he said ahead of the devastating defeat in Gdansk.

“I think every player knows you come here to fight for trophies and to be a better player. The pressure to win is there, but pressure is good for me.

"If we win trophies, it is the most important thing,” he continued. "Of course, it’s good for a player to win individual awards and I will never say I don’t want to be the best player in the league or I don’t want to be the PFA Player of the Season.

“I want to be [that] but I want to be [that] if the team wins trophies. If the team does win trophies, for me, it’s the same.”

However, he is clearly in no rush to go trophy hunting elsewhere, revealing he is more than happy to wait for Mata’s prized No.8 shirt, if he leaves the club in 12 months time.

“I guess I’ll have to wait for the number 8 another year…” he posted on Instagram. “Congrats brother!! Well deserved.

“An example and inspiration both on and off the pitch.”

Fernandes’ very public desire to push United back to the pinnacle of European football could also influence Solskjaer’s transfer window.

According to the Sun , he would like to see a defensive midfielder and a new central defender arrive to help in their push for the title next term.

Raphael Varane looks to be at the front of the queue in the defensive department, with United believed to be in talks with Real Madrid over a £50m transfer.

As for the midfield signing, Declan Rice continues to be touted as a target, with his West Ham future thrown into further doubt amid suggestions he has turned down two contract offers.
