Bruno Fernandes picks out 'amazing' Manchester United teammate for praise after Brighton win

Bruno Fernandes hailed the "amazing" David de Gea for preserving Manchester United's clean sheet in their victory over Brighton at the Amex.

United ran out 3-0 winners on the south coast but having been a spectator for three-quarters of the game De Gea was called on to make two fine saves late in the second, denying Aaron Connolly and Neal Maupay.

The Spaniard has been under pressure since his error in United's first game back allowed Tottenham to take the lead, with Steven Bergwijn's shot too powerful despite the United goalkeeper getting both hands behind the ball.

Since then De Gea has kept successive Premier League clean sheets and he looked sharp at Brighton to make two saves that while they weren't crucial in the context of the game, they did extend United's impressive defensive record during an unbeaten run that now stretches to 15 games.

It was put to Fernandes that United's display at the Amex had been a complete performance, but the Portuguese midfielder was more concerned with the result.

"It’s not important if it’s complete or not, what is important is the three points," he told Sky Sports.

"We did a good game, we played well, the result is good, we don’t concede goals again and for us that is really important, our defenders deserve it and David did an amazing job today, he had two or three saves at the end that were amazing."

While United had needed extra-time to beat Norwich City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, that disjointed performance featured eight changes from the side who had cruised past Sheffield United at Old Trafford a week ago.

With that starting XI restored United were again dominant on Premier League duty in keeping up the pressure on Leicester City in third and Chelsea in fourth.

"We knew after the last game we played we had a lot of time, we knew we needed to come in the game and the first minutes would be important because we are fresh, we need to try and push forward and score," said Fernandes.
