Bruno Fernandes opens up on criticism from his dad after Man Utd penalty miss

Bruno Fernandes has lifted the lid on the criticism he faced from his father after he missed a penalty in Manchester United's clash with Newcastle last month.

Midfielder Fernandes has a fearsome reputation from 12 yards and had converted all of his penalties for United ahead of the trip to St James' Park.

But with the teams level at 1-1, the Portugual star saw his spot kick saved by Karl Darlow just before the hour mark.

Fernandes went on to make amends for the miss by putting United ahead in the 86th minute, before grabbing an added-time assist as the Red Devils ran out 4-1 winners thanks to a late flurry of goals.

Despite his goal and assist in the north-east, Fernandes admits he faced some stern words from his dad after his failure to convert against the Magpies.

"The day after the Newcastle game, my dad sent me a message – and he never sends me a message, he always calls me the day after the game, always," the 26-year-old told the official Manchester United podcast.

"And this message says: 'Congratulations on your goal, but from tomorrow I will start to explain to you how to take penalties!'

"I was like: 'Hey, I've missed one penalty in 11 and he's talking to me about this,' because he never scored a penalty in all the years he was playing football!

"But this kind of situation helps you improve because all the time you know you have people behind you who will always ask more and demand more from you."

Fernandes joined United in January and has so far lived up to the initial £47million the club paid to prise him from Sporting.

He has scored 18 goals and laid on 13 assists for his teammates in 33 appearances for the Old Trafford club.

Fernandes was an unused substituted in Portugal's 7-0 thrashing of Andorra on Wednesday but is expected to feature in Saturday evening's Nations League clash with France.
