Bruno Fernandes' new contract details as Man Utd and Tottenham target's release clause rises

Bruno Fernandes crushed Manchester United's hopes of a potential transfer after he signed a new deal with Sporting Lisbon.

The 25-year-old was constantly linked with a switch to Old Trafford in the summer, but a move never materialised.

Reports of financial difficulty for Sporting led to suggestions they would have to cash in on Fernandes, but the midfielder has instead penned a new deal in the Portuguese capital.

Fernandes' contract expiry date remains the same - June 2023 - but his release clause has been bumped up from £65m to £85m.

That is also a blow to Tottenham who had considered a move for the midfielder after he was shortlisted by new manager Jose Mourinho.

Fernandes was thought to favour a move to the north London club over United were he to opt for a Premier League switch.

But following his new deal he spoke of the pride he feels in the nation's capital as well as a promise to further his already impressive efforts.

He told Sporting's official website: "It's a pride for me and a recognition of my work; it's a sign that I'm doing things well.

"I have been trying my best to do what is best for the club. It is for what I did on the pitch, but also showed that I liked Sporting CP and took pride in representing the club I represent.

"For me it is, and always will be, a privilege to be here and be able to wear the Sporting CP jersey.

"You can expect more and better. I promise the same delivery and dedication so we can have more moments of glory as we had last season."

United were looking to add an attacking threat to their midfield options having struggled for goals this season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's front three have been their main supply of goals, but Fernandes could've added another dimension.
