Bruno Fernandes named on three-man for Europa League Player of the Season award

Bruno Fernandes has been named as one of three players on the shortlist for the Europa League Player of the Season award.

Sevilla star Ever Banega and Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku make up the other options.

Fernandes ended the competition as its highest goalscorer, netting eight times in 10 appearances for both Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon.

Banega played a pivotal part in getting Sevilla to the final and eventually winning the trophy.

While Lukaku was terrific in front of goal for Inter, scoring seven times in the competition.

United got to the semi-finals before meeting Sevilla after lockdown with the games being played over one leg instead.

In a straight shootout with the Spanish side, they lost 2-1 after initially taking the lead.

Fernandes had struck from the penalty spot within 10 minutes only for Suso and Luuk de Jong to clunch victory for Julen Lopetegui's men.

It saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer go without a trophy despite United being favourites to win the Europa League.

Prior to their loss, Fernandes had scored against Copenhagen - again with a penalty - after the Red Devils were taken to extra-time.

The 26-year-old was also in fine form for Sporting Lisbon, before he joined United in the winter transfer window.

In the group stage, he had netted five times - including an absolute stunner against PSV Eindhoven in a 4-0 win.

Lukaku, on the other hand, infamously scored in both ends in the final that saw Inter Milan lose 3-2.

It was a cruel end for the former United striker, who had a fine campaign under Antonio Conte.

Ultimately, it was Sevilla who would get their hands on the trophy once again - making it a total of six wins in the competition, more than anyone else.

And it was largely down to the performances of Banega, who pulled the strings in midfield.

The Argentine has since swapped life in Spain for Saudi Arabia after joining Al-Shabab.
