Bruno Fernandes' Man Utd impact highlighted as stats compare start to big-money signings

Bruno Fernandes has been a star since moving to Old Trafford for £67.6m in the January transfer window - and his stats show he is a cut above.

Manchester United have spent big money since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement as they look to replicate his success.

Many of their expensive acquisitions have failed to make the grade however and have subsequently been moved on.

But Fernandes, who has seven goals and seven assists in his first 11 games, is officially the best signing in recent times, as revealed by William Hill, who have trawled through the archives to see how the Red Devils new boys compares to the club's other expensive midfielder signings.

No United player has been able to match his numbers over the same time period with only Romelu Lukaku scoring the same amount, although he only provided three assists.

Angel di Maria is the closest is the assists column having registered six in his first 11 outings - one less than the Portuguese star.

But Fernandes' contributions in terms of both goals and assists are testament to his all round influence.

The Red Devils upturn in form has coincided with the midfielder's arrival as they strive towards the top four.

Fernandes is still yet to taste defeat in 16 outings for the club having made his debut against Wolves in February.

The 25-year-old has been hailed for his influence on and off the pitch with players and coaches highlighting how he has driven standards at United.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently revealed that he consulted Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays with Fernandes at international level, before signing the midfielder.

"You speak to teammates, who maybe play with them in the national team," he said.

“So obviously Cristiano was an easy goal for me.

“I managed to get through Patrice Evra, I managed to get hold of Cristiano and his recommendation obviously stands him [Fernandes] in good stead.”
