Bruno Fernandes makes surprise Portugal admission ahead of Germany Euro 2020 clash

Bruno Fernandes admits Portugal's current crop will never be able to top what Euro 2016 did for the country.

Having watched from home as his nation reigned supreme on the continent five years ago, the Manchester United playmaker is very much at the forefront this summer.

Inspired by Juventus forward and former United star Cristiano Ronaldo - who scored twice against Hungary in their Group F opener - Portugal are well-placed to progress in a section that also includes France and Germany.

Of course, Fernandes and co still have those two nations to play before they can rubber-stamp qualification.

Even if they do emerge from the 'Group of Death' and successfully defend their crown at Euro 2020, though, it may not be enough to see them held in the same regard as those from 2016.

Fernandes said: "It's difficult to say because five years ago we lifted the trophy. Now we are here fighting to do the same again. I don't know if we can be better because if we reach the final and lift the trophy again it is the same as five years ago."

Despite that claim from Fernandes, the general consensus is that Portugal have a stronger squad this time around.

Ronaldo is still going strong at 36-years-old, while Manchester City defender Ruben Dias, Joao Felix, Diogo Jota and Fernandes himself have all emerged since Portugal got their hands on the trophy in 2016.

Fernandes, who has scored four goals in 30 appearances for his country, added: "Every game is difficult in the Euros. We've had some surprises, not a lot with Hungary, but every game is different.

"Teams play in different ways. We know the individual skills of German players, but our focus is on the collective.

"We know what we have to do. Regardless of the victory against Hungary, there are things we have to correct - and we will correct for next game. Our focus is to give our best against Germany in order to win."
