Bruno Fernandes admitted he didn't feel a touch on his foot after being credited with an assist for Manchester United's goal against Fulham.
United went 1-0 up early on against the relegated West London club, when Fernandes appeared to flick the ball onto Edinson Cavani — who scored a stunning long-range chip.
But replays could not conclusively show Fernandes getting a touch on the ball, meaning the goal ought to have been disallowed because Cavani was in an offside position. VAR checked the goal and allowed it to stand, giving United the lead that they eventually had cancelled out by Joe Bryan's header to make it 1-1.
Speaking to BBC sport after the game, Fernandes accepted that he probably didn't get a touch on the ball.
He said: "Honestly I didn't feel the touch. The referee said I touched the ball. How it is, I don't care honestly.
"I always say the most important goal is the one that hits the net, it doesn't matter who gets the goal or the assist..
Adding to his comments in an interview with Sky Sports, Fernandes said: "Honestly, I don't know. In the moment I don't think I touched the ball. I haven't seen the replay, I need to see it. "
Fernandes also lauded the return of supporters, as United were loudly cheered on by 10,000 fans inside Old Trafford after the relaxing of covid-19 restrictions. It was the first time United had played in front of fans since March 2020 and the beginning of the pandemic.
"It was really good [to have fans back]," Fernandes said, who had only played four home games in front of fans before covid struck.
"It's such a good feeling you know. We know how important fans are to football so it was really nice to have them back. We didn't give them what we wanted with the victory.
"We pressed a lot. We had many chances to do it but we don't do it. You shoot, you try and the ball doesn't go in but sometimes that happens. We'll put our heads down and focus on the next game."
