Bruno Fernandes makes Edinson Cavani admission after first Manchester United goal

Bruno Fernandes has admitted he passed up the opportunity to score his first Manchester United hat-trick to gift Edinson Cavani his first goal for the club.

Cavani, 33, joined on a free transfer during the summer transfer window but has been restricted to substitute appearances since his move to England.

The Uruguayan was introduced in the closing stages of United's Premier League game against Everton with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men coming from behind to lead thanks to a brace from Fernandes.

As the Toffees searched for a late equaliser, they were hit on the break by United and Fernandes who slid the ball to Cavani and the veteran slotted the ball past Jordan Pickford for his first United goal.

Speaking after the game, Fernandes admitted the idea of going for his hat-trick did cross his mind while confirming he didn't care whether the second goal was awarded to him or Marcus Rashford.

"If Marcus touched it a little bit, it can be his goal," he told BT Sport . "It doesn't matter to me. The most important thing as a No.10 for me is serving my teammates as I did in the end with Edi [Cavani]. I had the chance to shoot and maybe look for the hat-trick but I saw Edi alone and he had the chance. If Marcus takes the second goal, it's not a problem."

Solskjaer believes Cavani's fitness is building following his summer move and expects more goals to come from his new forward.

He said: "Hopefully, hopefully. He's getting better and better, sharper and sharper. Today was more about seeing the game out. He did well."
