Bruno Fernandes likened to Man Utd greats after 'changing atmosphere'

Bruno Fernandes has been likened to some of Man Utd's greats after making an immediate impact at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese midfielder has impressed since his £67million move from Sporting Lisbon last month, scoring twice and providing two assists in his first five appearances.

United have not lost since Fernandes' arrival, and have looked a team rejuvenated in their most recent fixtures.

And BT Sport pundit Peter Crouch has hailed Fernandes for playing a pivotal role in their upturn in fortunes.

"The United shirt has proven a heavy one to wear for too many players in recent years," Crouch told the Mail . "These are early days, of course, but I don’t think Fernandes will suffer from the weight of expectation and he looks to be just the player they need.

"I used to play against United teams that had leaders in every single position on the field — they were men, big characters who never knew when they were beaten.

"The best compliment I can pay to Fernandes is that he looks to have the same attributes as those who went before him. It only takes one man to change the atmosphere and that is what he has done."

Fernandes has opened the scoring from the penalty spot in both of United's previous games - a 3-0 win over Watford , and the 5-0 drubbing of Club Brugge.

He was in particularly fine form in Thursday's Europa League demolition, setting up fellow new boy Odion Ighalo to break his duck for United's second.

Red Devils' boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the substituted Fernandes, but hailed the midfielder's attitude after the match.

"When I took him off, obviously he didn't want to come off," Solskjaer said.

"That's one thing. He just loves football. He's got so much enthusiasm and smile about him. He just wants to be out there, wants to better.

"I tried to send him in because it's cold. 'No, I want to watch.' He just loves football. He'll probably know everything about football. He's one of these old school boys and football is everything for him.

"He's been a big, big boost for us."
