Bruno Fernandes was only ever destined for Manchester United.
The Red Devils were linked with the Portugal international in the summer transfer window but made signing Harry Maguire the priority.
Once that transfer was out of the way, and January came around, United went for broke and got their man.
In terms of competition for Fernandes' signature, the Old Trafford club were pretty much left to their own devices to make the transfer happen.
Tottenham had been interested, but they signed Giovani Lo Celso instead before bringing in Steven Bergwijn.
The only other Premier League club linked with the Portuguese was Man City.
But, as reported by The Independent, the Citizens had absolute no interest in making the transfer happen.
Man City have a plethora of talent in attacking midfield, and were instead looking into the possibility of signing a new centre-back.
That didn't stop the speculation though, which left Manchester City manager Guardiola somewhat 'baffled'.
So much so in fact that he expressed his confusion in a press conference in which he made a subtle reference to the reports, without naming Fernandes.
"I said many times it looks like we are linked with a thousand million players every month. I don't know if the agents want to create something to do that," said Guardiola.
"But I think the club was not in talks with his agent about this player, but they link this guy and a thousand million more."
