Bruno Fernandes jokes he wants squad number from Juan Mata at Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes has joked he wants Juan Mata's shirt number after his contract extension at Manchester United was announced.

The MEN revealed on Friday that Mata had signed a one-year contract extension at United after his current deal at the club expired, but the Spaniard is now set to play at Old Trafford for yet another season - the midfielder joined the Reds in January 2014 for £37m.

Mata has been limited to sporadic involvement this term, but Fernandes has provided United with the quality in that position that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer demands and the Portugal star has now joked he's patiently waiting for Mata's number to come available.

"I guess I’ll have to wait for the number 8 another year," Fernandes joked on social media, reacting to Mata's extension.

"Congrats brother!! Well deserved! An example and an inspiration on and off the pitch," he added.

Mata is a hugely popular figure among United's players and supporters alike and the news of his contract extension has been warmly welcomed, while some have suggested the 33-year-old could move to an ambassadorial role at the club upon his eventual retirement.
