Bruno Fernandes identifies where Manchester United must improve next season

Bruno Fernandes has called for Manchester United to be more clinical in front of goal next season, after their agonising Europa League exit.

United missed multiple chances to retake the lead in their semi-final clash with Sevilla in Cologne and were eventually punished by a late Luuk de Jong sucker punch and went out, losing 2-1 after Fernandes' penalty had given them an early lead.

The Portuguese playmaker admitted United did enough to win on the night, but rued those missed opportunities. He says United must make good performances count with more ruthless finishing. Fernandes, Anthony Martial and Fred all squandered decent opportunities in the game.

“It was more than an impressive performance, it was a great game,” Fernandes told BT Sport after the game.“We created a lot of chances, but in football it’s not enough.

“When you create chances you need to finish, you need to score and today we missed a lot in front of goal. Of course, if you keep creating these chances you will score next time.

“Obviously, everyone is not satisfied about this because we want to go through. We want to win the game and be in the final, but it’s not possible today. Now it’s time to rest, to refresh the legs and think of next season.”

Sevilla keeper Bono was among the reasons why United couldn't find a crucial second goal, the second game in successive in which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have been denied by a super goalkeeping display.

“Of course the keeper did very well,” added Fernandes. “He was amazing like [the goalkeeper] in the last match against Copenhagen. They were two very good keepers - we can say nothing about that. We can say that he saved his team two or three times.”
