Bruno Fernandes hits back at Manchester United critics following Chelsea defeat

Bruno Fernandes has called for calm and perspective from those criticising Manchester United after their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea.

United were way below their best in the 3-1 loss to Frank Lampard's side and saw their hopes of winning the competition dashed by Olivier Giroud and Mason Mount strikes coupled with a Harry Maguire own goal. Only a Fernandes penalty late on offered Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men any consolation and they will now focus on their top four battle.

United face West Ham on Wednesday evening in a vital game for their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

And Fernandes - who tasted defeat for the first time ever in a United shirt in the Wembley semi-final - has urged his teammates to refocus.

"We were not the best before and we are not the worst now," Fernandes said on Instagram.

"We are really sad about the result and losing the chance to win the FA Cup, something we had hoped for! Now it is time to gather forces and fight for our goal in the Premier League."

United remain in the hunt for silverware in the Europa League as well as a top four finish.

But their 19-game unbeaten streak came crashing to a halt at Wembley, with much of the scrutiny after the defeat honing in on goalkeeper David de Gea. The Spaniard may have done better for both Giroud and Mount's goals, while Fernandes was the best of United's players on a poor day in general from start to finish.
