Bruno Fernandes has sights set on overtaking Harry Maguire in Man Utd competition

Bruno Fernandes is topping most of the charts for Man Utd so far this season, but still has his eyes on another one led by captain Harry Maguire.

The Portuguese midfielder leads the club's ranks in terms of goals and assists, but still trails Maguire's tally of minutes played.

Maguire has played more than any other player in world football in 2020, clocking up an impressive 4,745 minutes over the year, according to a CIES survey.

Much of that has been down to United's progress in cup competitions, but it's clear how much they rely on Maguire and their talisman Fernandes.

Man City's Ruben Dias - who started the year at Benfica - and Barcelona's Lionel Messi are second and third on the list, ahead of Fernandes in fourth with a total of 4,164 minutes, while Victor Lindelof is down in seventh.

But despite calls for Fernandes to be rested more often for United, the 26-year-old is intent on trying to catch Maguire up.

When told of the survey by United's official website, Fernandes joked: "I’m not happy. I need to say this to the coach: ‘I want to be the first one!’"

Before adding: "Of course, it’s really important to play. The more games and more minutes you play, the more confidence you have. It’s always like that.

"I feel the confidence from the staff and the coach. It’s very important for me as this is part of the way I am settling down. I feel the trust from the coach. ‘I need you and I want you to play, I will give you the chances’.

“When you see the minutes I have had this season, it’s trusting in me and I have to give something to the club."

By something, Fernandes no doubt means trophies, given his insatiable hunger for silverware at his new club.

United fell at the semi-final hurdle in three separate competitions last season, and have already been demoted from the Champions League to the Europa.

Fernandes is doing all he can to fire United to glory, though, setting up Marcus Rashford's opener against Leicester on Boxing Day before scoring himself in the 2-2 draw.

After a shaky start, United now find themselves involved in a title race - providing they can keep pace with Liverpool - and Fernandes believes the Red Devils can end their search for a trophy sooner rather than later.

"The only thing I’ve missed in this year is the trophies," he told BT Sport . "I don’t have trophies for the club and I’m not happy about that. I hope 2021 can be better in that way.

"I think everything can be realistic if we believe. You make your own reality. I think the most important thing is that you have a target and you have to hit it. My target is winning trophies. It doesn’t matter which kind of trophy it is, I want to win all of them."
