Bruno Fernandes hails "proper" Man Utd teammate as Red Devils ease into Europa League semis

Bruno Fernandes hailed Edinson Cavani as a "proper striker" after his goal helped Manchester United reach the Europa League semi-finals.

The Uruguayan volleyed home in the first-half to score his 50th goal in European competitions.

It follows on from his goal at Tottenham at the weekend as the 34-year-old continues to produce for the Red Devils.

Rumours persist over his future as he is linked with a return to South America, but United again reaped the rewards of his quality.

United were able to control proceedings and Fernandes insists focus now shifts onto the league.

He told BT Sport: "It was a good game. The Europa League is always difficult to play. It doesn't matter who you play against.

"We know Granada have quality - they can create something. We did well. We controlled the game and had a lot of the ball. We kept the ball moving. The result shows that.

"Now is the time for the next step and win a semi-final. [Before then] it's time to focus on the league.

"He [Edinson Cavani] is a proper striker, a proper number nine."

United will now take on Roma in what is their fifth semi-final over the past two seasons.

Former Old Trafford stars Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are now playing in the Italian capital, but Fernandes remains confident.

He added: "Every team will give you problems. They have a good organisation defensively, they can create problems offensively. Some of their players have played in England.

"We know what we have to do. If we do the right things, we will have our chances to win the game."

United's next assignment is a home contest against Burnley where they will look to consolidate second place in the league.
