Bruno Fernandes gives verdict on controversial penalty given in Man Utd's win v Aston Villa

Bruno Fernandes is adamant that the referee made the correct decision in awarding him a penalty during Manchester United's 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Thursday.

The Portuguese playmaker grabbed the first goal of the game after Jonathan Moss pointed to the spot as Fernandes was adjudged to have been tripped by Ezri Konsa.

The decision looked harsh, and the Premier League admitted after the game that VAR had got it wrong.

But speaking to Sky Sports ahead of his side's game against Southampton on Monday, Fernandes insisted it was the correct call.

"It was a penalty and the referee saw it as a penalty," he said. "The contact there is normal. I don't provoke the contact I just got the ball back and give the first touch.

"The guy tried to take the ball but his legs stayed down with me but I needed to go on the ground because of my legs.

"I take him and he take me. It was a normal contact but for the referee it was a penalty. I am happy because we scored and we opened the game there. Everyone can have a different opinion though."

Fernandes was also asked about his reaction to the Europa League draw, with United taking on either Istanbul Basaksehir or Copenhagen if they beat LASK.

But he added: "For me, it’s the same as I don’t care because, when you play for Manchester, you know you need to win every game.

"It doesn’t matter who you play against when you play for one of the biggest teams in the world and you can beat everyone.

"We need to focus on beating everyone so, of course for me, the first point is winning against LASK. It doesn’t matter if you have five goals away, we need to win again and need to score five goals. It doesn’t matter – football is about winning."
