Bruno Fernandes flying into UK to complete medical ahead of Man Utd transfer

Bruno Fernandes is flying into Manchester on Wednesday to complete his move to Manchester United.

Fernandes will undergo a medical at United’s AON Training Complex before putting pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year deal to complete his switch from Sporting Lisbon.

United will pay an initial £46.6million, with two further add-on payments of £8.5m and £12.7m due on completion of certain clauses.

That could see the total package United pay for the 25-year-old attacking midfielder reach £67.8m.

Fernandes is likely to complete his move on Wednesday, with the relevant paperwork submitted to enable him to make his United debut against Wolves at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United always felt Sporting – who initially wanted £67m up front for Fernandes - would yield to a lower fee because of financial constraints at the club, and so it proved.

Sporting were forced to lower their demands and accept a lower initial fee for Fernandes, with United happy with the structured add-ons.

Barcelona made a late bid to try to hijack United's move for Fernandes, but is understood United moved swiftly to finalise the deal and ensure they got their man.

The Spanish giants are understood to have offered a bigger fee for Fernandes, but did not want to pay the bulk of the fee until the summer, which did not suit Sporting.

United were interested in signing Fernandes last summer, but decided against pursuing the attacking midfielder, who plundered 33 goals from 53 games for Sporting last season.

Fernandes has already scored 15 goals from 28 appearances this season, as well as providing 14 assists, with United in desperate need of a player with his goal return and creative spark.

With Paul Pogba having missed most of the season through injury, Scott McTominay sidelined and top scorer Marcus Rashford out for at least three months, United needed a player with the attacking qualities of Fernandes and look to have secured him.
