Bruno Fernandes explains why Marcus Rashford was set to take second Man United penalty vs Spurs

Bruno Fernandes says Marcus Rashford would have taken Manchester United's second penalty against Tottenham Hotspur, before it was overturned by VAR.

The Portuguese midfielder equalised with a penalty of his own in the second half, after Steven Bergwijn had given Tottenham the lead at half time.

But United seemingly were on course to win the game late on after referee Jon Moss deemed Eric Dier to have fouled Fernandes in the box, and pointed to the spot for the second time in the match.

Fernandes, having taken the first spot kick, was expected to step up and take the ball again, but Marcus Rashford was the United player who seemingly grabbed the ball.

When the decision was overturned by the video assistant referee, the England striker was seen giving the ball back to the referee for the game to be restarted.

And Fernandes confirmed after the game that Rashford was set to take the penalty, as his teammates "trust" him.

"I like the pressure, so maybe with the crowd it will be better, but the most important is that I score," Fernandes told Sky Sports after the final whistle.

"Next time, maybe [I] shoot another one. We have a good penalty takers, we have a lot of players who can take the penalties.

"If the second one goes front, was Rashy's [to] score and I trust in Rashy like everyone trust in me."

The result means Spurs stay eighth in the table, and miss the chance to close the gap on the side above them.

Manchester United stay fifth, two points behind fourth place Chelsea, but having played a game more.
