Bruno Fernandes breaks silence on Manchester United Champions League exit

Bruno Fernandes admits Manchester United 'were not good enough' as they were knocked out of the Champions League in midweek.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will be back competing in the Europa League next year after they threw away the chance to qualify from Group H with defeat away at RB Leipzig on Tuesday night.

United had got off to the best possible start with wins over Paris Saint-Germain and Leipzig in their opening two European matches this season, but soon saw their hard work unravel with a shock defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir on matchday three.

A revenge win over Basaksehir at Old Trafford left United only needing a point from their final two matches to qualify for the knockout stages, but defeats to PSG and Leipzig sent them out of the competition.

United will need to pick themselves up and dust themselves off before another gruelling campaign in the Europa League next year and Fernandes admits his side did not do enough to still be in the Champions League following their exit.

"Not good enough from us," Fernandes wrote on his Instagram account. "We have to do much better to represent a such (sic) big club and especially playing in the @championsleague with big teams!"

United were knocked out of the Europa League by Sevilla at the semi-final stage last season but will be desperate to go further in the competition this time around.

They will discover their opponents for the round of 32 when the draw takes place next Monday.
