Bruno Fernandes admits regret at goading Pep Guardiola during Manchester derby

Bruno Fernandes has revealed his regret at goading Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Manchester United playmaker Fernandes gestured to Guardiola to 'shush' in City's 2-0 derby defeat at Old Trafford earlier this month.

The pair had a verbal exchange on the touchline during the game, with £46.6million signing Fernandes raising his right index finger to his lips in reaction to Guardiola, close by on the touchline.

But Fernandes says he now regrets his actions and admitted he should have ignored Guardiola and focused on the game.

"As everything in life, nothing is defined by what a person has or had and won," said Fernandes.

"I condemn myself because the best response would have been to remain silent and he would have been left to speak alone."

Fernandes, who has been an immediate hit at United with three goals and four assists in nine games, admitted he has to think twice as quickly in the English game.

"English football is different from the rest," said Fernandes, who joined United from Sporting Lisbon.

"Here teams come to Old Trafford and want to put pressure on, attack and take risks.

“The intensity of the game is very high. I was thinking fast in Portugal but here I have to think twice as fast."

Fernandes also revealed his desire to follow in the footsteps of former United stars and Portuguese compatriots Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani, by winning the biggest trophies with the Reds.

"Cristiano and Nani won big trophies here and that makes me want to achieve that," said Fernandes.

"Nani, with whom I had the opportunity to train at Sporting, has always spoken well to me about United.

"And the fact that Cristiano has given a lot good references to whoever spoke to him during my transfer makes me proud, for a player like him to recognise my worth."

"Manchester was a dream club. My brother was a big fan of Barcelona, and I was a fan of United.

“My father worked for some time in Switzerland and we went one Christmas there and we went to a sports shop and by chance my brother got a Barcelona jersey and I got a Manchester United jersey.

“At the time I dreamed, of course, but I played for the youth of Boavista and it was a completely different reality. Now I want to make the most of it to leave a mark here."

Fernandes also admitted he struggled to believe how much United paid for him, with the potential outlay totalling £67.7m if all add-ons are achieved.

"Never were the values so high as now," said Fernandes. "I think it's an exaggeration.

“My transfer, the figure mentioned, the add-ons that could still be, the value that was paid for me was very high. Players that were bought at that value some time ago were Golden Ball winners."
