Under the country’s sweeping new sharia law expected to go into effect on April 3, the Southeast Asian kingdom of Brunei will begin punishing people with death by stoning if found guilty of engaging in homosexual intercourse or adultery, setting off outrage from human rights groups.
Details: Homosexuality is already illegal in Brunei, with a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The Guardian reports that the new law, pushed by the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, would apply only to Muslims — who make up about two-thirds of the country's population. Other aspects of the law include the amputation of hands or feet if convicted for robbery.
