Brunch: Harvest Blue, Mangawhai Heads

Address: 198 Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai Heads
Herald rating:

Harvest Blue cafe, Mangawhai.
Harvest Blue cafe, Mangawhai.

The menu is a wide mix. From organic, raw cabinet treats (they're amazing!) to the all-day brunch menu which features everything from french toast and the "fabbie fry up" to the hashbrown breakfast tower (hashbrowns with tamarind creme fraiche, mushroom, spinach and poached egg) and roasted mushroom medley.

The look is fine for a beach cafe - the owners have given it a recent makeover and it's a big improvement but inside it's a bit of an odd setup with conservatory style ceilings at either end. There is plenty of seating outside and toys to amuse the kids.

We ordered the hashbrown breakfast tower ($18.90) and the spanish omelette with chorizo, smoked tomatoes, olives and basil ($17.50).

The omelette was terrific - big and tasty - while the hashbrown tower was just okay. The homemade hash was great but we're unsure about the addition of the tamarind creme fraiche.

The service is one of the things that makes this cafe a standout. Friendly, genuine and happy to help.

The coffee is great and well worth popping in for a takeout if you're off to the beach, or the impressive skate park just down the road.

Overall, Mangawhai's population swells by several thousand over summer and it can be hard to get a table at the many cafes and restaurants. Make sure you book a table here for brunch, or dinner - while it doesn't have the best view, the food is great and so is the vibe.
