Bruichladdich joins exclusive international list of 'profit with purpose' businesses

Bruichladdich has become the first Scottish single malt producer to earn B Corporation status after meeting stringent 'profit with a purpose' standards.

The Islay distillery is also the only whisky and gin distillery in Europe to join the list of businesses which show clear transparency and legal accountability on meeting social and environmental standards.

It joins brands including Edinburgh-based Brewgooder, outdoor wear maker Patagonia, childcare specialist Jojo Maman Bebe, Teapigs and Ben and Jerry's on the list.

The distillery was reopened in 2001 by a group of private investors and now produces four different spirits, the first Islay gin The Botanist and three single malt whiskies - Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore.

One of nine distilleries on the island, it is the third smallest producer but the largest private employer.

The business said it is community orientated and that includes developing career opportunities for 80 permanent Islay employees, improving benefits and training programmes as a focus on using local suppliers where possible.

It said that it has a focus on sustainability which has included buying 30 acres of land, set aside for research and development on sustainable agriculture.

The distillery also said it has a mission to de-carbonise its operations by 2025.

Chief executive Douglas Taylor said: “After 15 months of intense work and rigorous examination we stand here, not only as the first single malt Scotch whisky distillery to be B Corp certified, but as the first whisky and gin company in Europe to attain B Corp status.

“I’ve been asked what the benefit is to us, but that’s not important.

“Being a certified B Corp business is validation that the transparent, sustainable, community minded business we’ve been running since 2001 is a worthwhile project.

“We are excited to now be officially part of a global movement of leaders using business as a force for good, standing shoulder to shoulder, and working together to create a more inclusive and sustainable economy.”
