'Brucie will be aggrieved' - Burnley boss Sean Dyche on goal that beat Newcastle United

Sean Dyche can understand why Steve Bruce feels 'aggrieved' about the corner kick awarded in the build-up to Chris Wood's goal against Newcastle United - but the Burnley boss believes Andy Carroll was lucky to escape a red card.

Referee Tim Robinson, who was making his Premier League debut, initially awarded a goal kick to Newcastle after Federico Fernandez was bundled over while shepherding the ball out of play under heavy pressure from Wood just before the hour mark.

But after consulting his assistant, Robinson instead awarded a corner, which Wood scored from after getting his head on Ashley Westwood's delivery to the far post.

Bruce was not happy after the game - claiming Robinson looked 'short' and was 'not ready' to referee a top-flight game - while Dyche felt Carroll could have seen red for an elbow on Ben Mee in the second half after being shown a yellow card.

The Burnley manager was keen to make it clear that there was no 'malice' in it but that Carroll's elbow was 'loose'.

"The game's in flux with all these tight decisions. I mean they've had a tough one for the corner," he told reporters after the Clarets' 1-0 win at Turf Moor.

"Is it a foul? Not necessarily but the modern game probably suggests it is because you touch anyone in the back now they go down and it normally ends up a foul.

"It's not something I enjoy about the game nowadays but that's the way it goes so I think Brucie will be aggrieved about that and then we've taken a great corner and attacked it well and Woody scores a great goal.

"On the other hand, you talk about decisions. I was surprised by Andy Carroll staying on the pitch. Really surprised by that.

"Just in the modern game, again, no disrespect to him, I just think if you leave an elbow in and it's too far, too high and too late then the way the modern game is, you probably get sent off for that but he didn't.

"It shouldn't be a game of decisions but it might be talked about as that but overall I think we edged it and it was important today to edge it."
