Bruce Springsteen says Democrats have no 'effective' candidate to beat Donald Trump in 2020

Bruce Springsteen is convinced Donald Trump could win re-election in 2020, due to a lack of credible challenger on the Democratic side.

The singer-songrwiter, who has criticised Trump in the past and suggested he isn't competent enough to be the commander-in-chief, told The Sunday Times he hasn't seen anyone capable of competing with the tycoon so far.

"I don't see anyone out there at the moment ... the man who can beat Trump, or the woman who can beat Trump," Springsteen said.

He added: "You need someone who can speak some of the same language ... and the Democrats don't have an obvious, effective presidential candidate."

The Boss also referred to Trump as "deeply damaged at his core" in a recent interview with Esquire.

On that occasion too, he expressed doubt as to whether a serious challenger can emerge to counter Trump in the next election.

"I do believe we’ll survive Trump. But I don’t know if I see a unifying figure on the horizon," he said.

"That worries me. Because the partisanship and the country being split down the middle is something that’s gravely dangerous."

Springsteen, 69, will see his successful Broadway show released on Netflix on 16 December.

He has also revealed that he's currently working on a new solo album, his first one since High Hope, which came out in 2014.

The musician is also planning on going on tour in the UK next year with the E Street Band.
