Bruce Irvin: Thursday night games should be illegal

Thursday Night Football is an abomination. Seahawks veteran Bruce Irvin can certainly attest to that. Now 35 years old and having played 134 career regular season games, it takes more than just three days for his body to recover from a pro football game.

On Twitter last night Irvin remarked that he’s still sore from Sunday’s loss to the Panthers and thinks Thursday night games should be illegal.

Buy Seahawks Tickets

We’re all on board for eliminating TNF entirely, but the NFL does not surrender revenue willingly – no matter the cost to player safety. Amazon is paying the league $1 billion a year for the rights to Thursday night games.

TNF games are often sloppier than usual and this one has the potential to get particularly ugly. Geno Smith is struggling with turnovers, the Seahawks are down to scraps at running back and they’re about to face a 49ers team with the best defense in the league. They rank first in fewest yards and points allowed and second in DVOA.

The Niners also crushed Seattle 27-7 back in Week 2.

On the other hand, San Francisco has its own injuries to deal with. Deebo Samuel will be out a few weeks and rookie QB Brock Purdy suffered a rib injury on Sunday and has been limited at practice. If he can’t go, the Niners will look to their No. 4 quarterback, the recently-re-signed Josh Johnson. He is 1-8 as a starter in his career.
