Bruce Bochy admitted to hospital, will not manage Giants in series opener at Miami

MIAMI _ Giants manager Bruce Bochy was admitted to the University of Miami Hospital on Monday morning after feeling ill and will not be on the bench for the series opener at Marlins Park.

Bochy will be monitored overnight and "is resting comfortably and expected to return tomorrow," Giants senior media relations director Matt Chisholm said.

Bench coach Ron Wotus will manage the Giants as they send Johnny Cueto to the mound against Marlins ace Jose Fernandez.

The club did not disclose the nature of Bochy's illness; the 61-year-old had not complained of any recent maladies but has two stents in his heart after undergoing an unscheduled procedure in February, 2015, to treat a pair of 90 percent blockages.

Bochy has undergone regular heart checkups with a cardiologist in San Diego even before the surgery because his father, Gus, was 65 when he died of a heart attack in 1990.

"It's scary, but he's fine," said right-hander Jake Peavy, whose relationship with Bochy goes back to their days together with the San Diego Padres. "I hope they don't let him watch the game."

Wotus said he was made aware of Bochy's hospitalization shortly before noon; head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner took the manager to the hospital from the club's hotel on Key Biscayne.

Wotus hadn't spoken with Bochy but texted him a lineup that the manager approved.

"We talk all year about the lineup," Wotus said. "I just told him the lineup we expected to use and he said it was a go."

Wotus avoided specifics when discussing Bochy's condition but referenced the past heart issue while explaining why they didn't talk more in depth about the club.

"I want him to get better," Wotus said. "I don't want to add anything to his situation."

The Elias Sports Bureau confirms that a Giants win or loss Monday would go on Bochy's career ledger. Bochy (1765-1730) is four wins away from matching Jim Leyland for 15th on the all-time managerial victories list.
