Bruce Allen shoots down report about Alex Smith’s return timetable

Redskins president Bruce Allen has publicly denied a report that the Redskins expect Alex Smith to miss the 2019 season. According to Les Carpenter of the Washington Post, Allen said Smith is “really is a day-to-day guy.”

Last weekend, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said the Redskins don’t expect Smith to play at all next season as he works his way back from a broken leg and subsequent infection.

As Carpenter noted in his report, the Washington Post had already spoken with sources last year who said the Redskins are concerned as to whether Smith will ever be able to play again.

Allen was vague on an actual timetable for Smith’s return, but was sharp in calling the report “nonsense,” for what it’s worth.

The reality of the situation is likely somewhere closer to the middle. Neither Smith nor the Redskins know if he’ll be able to play again. It likely means the Redskins will consider addressing the position in free agency or the draft.
