Broxburn Athletic win derby thriller while Linlithgow draw sees manager depart

It was goals galore at the weekend as the eight fixtures involving West Lothian sides produced a remarkable 49 goals.

And there were three exciting West Lothian derby clashes that went right down to the wire.

In the East of Scotland Premier Division, Broxburn Athletic’s revival continued at the expense of Blackburn United in the first derby clash of the season, with Athletic running out 4-2 winners in a fixture that also saw three red cards and two penalties.

The hosts took a 15th minute lead from the spot thanks to Marty Lawrie after Richie Hutton had been tripped but Athletic - who made it three successive victories - were up at the half-time interval. Ross Allum bundled home the equaliser before David Greenhill fired the visitors in front on 38 minutes.

Cammie Ross made it 3-1 just after the break when his cross-come-shot looped into the top corner. United, though, refused to give in and reduced the deficit just before the hour mark when Lawrie slammed home his second spot-kick of the afternoon but Ross would grab his second five minutes from time to complete the scoring.

Both Athletic’s Gordon Donaldson and Lennon Smith of Blackburn were dismissed late on after a coming together while Lawrie was also shown red after he was controversially deemed to have brought down Ross on the edge of the box.

Elsewhere in the top flight, Linlithgow Rose squandered a two goal at Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale as they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw which ultimately saw boss Brown Ferguson dismissed.

Jack Ogilvie and Alan Docherty had given the visitors the perfect start only for Hutchie to pull one back before the break with Sandy Cunningham’s late leveller making it five without a win for the Rose, with Ferguson paying the price for a slow start that sees them 11 points adrift after seven games.

In Conference X, Whitburn netted late on twice as they defeated Stoneyburn 3-2 at home while in the other all-West Lothian clash in the division, West Calder United got the better of Fauldhouse United 4-3 at Park View.

A Reece Duncan goal had Whitburn a goal up at half-time. Fulshie boss Steven Sharp introduced Kyle Mooney and Cameron Donaldson at the break - and they both found the net as the visitors got themselves in front.

Martin Maguire levelled things up on 75 minutes as he headed home a corner before Louis Maguire calmly slotted beyond Matthew Craig three minutes from time for the winner as Burnie kept hold of third place in the table.

James Miller’s first-half hat-trick stole the show for West Calder as they jumped into fourth place.

Also in league action, it was a second win of the campaign for Bathgate Thistle as they won 3-1 at home to Edinburgh College with Kai Wilson grabbing two goals in as many minutes around the hour mark for the hosts.

Pumpherston suffered a 7-2 home loss to league leaders Syngenta.

Livingston United, meanwhile, booked their place in the third round of the King Cup with a tremendous 8-2 win away to Coldstream. Jeremiah Otonti bagged four for the visitors with Adam Main, Scott Bruce and Liam Johnston also on the scoresheet along with an own goal.

Over in the West of Scotland, Harthill Royal suffered a 3-1 loss away to Glenvale in Division Four.
