Broxburn Athletic hat-trick hero Zander Miller happy to take a back seat if it means Scottish Cup story continues

Zander Miller grabbed the goals to take Broxburn Athletic into the second round of the Scottish Cup.

But he says he will happily take a back seat this weekend if it means the Brox cause another upset by getting the better of SPFL League Two side Cowdenbeath on Saturday.

Miller notched a hat-trick, including a late winner, in the previous round as Athletic defeated Lowland League side East Stirlingshire in thrilling fashion at Albyn Park.

And, while he concedes this round’s trip to Fife will be an even greater challenge, he knows the visitors will have what it takes to progress to the third round.

Speaking to the West Lothian Courier, he said: “It’s an absolutely massive game and all the boys are looking forward to testing themselves against a league side.

“We’ve worked really hard to get in to this position and it’s a huge occasion, not only for the club but for the town as well.

“I’ve heard there will be four buses of supporters travelling up, which is incredible. Hopefully we can put on a performance that does them proud on the day.

“I scored a hat-trick in the last round and I could never have imagined that happening. Obviously, if I could do the same on Saturday that would be amazing but, honestly, I don’t really care who scores if it means we win.

“As long as we get through, that’s the main thing. There’s plenty of guys who can score goals.”

While the squad are confident heading into the fixture against a Blue Brazil side coming off six consecutive victories, Miller is under no illusions as to the nature of the task that faces the East of Scotland outfit.

He said: “It’s been a step up every round and this is no different. A lot of our guys have never played against a team of that level so it’s going to be brilliant test for us, individually and as a team, to see where we are and how we compare.

“Our chances will be few and far between so we need to take them, and at the other end Cowdenbeath are likely to be more ruthless than other teams we’ve faced so we need to keep them from creating too many. We need to be tight and organised and then see where that takes us.

“We are confident going into the game. We’ve only lost once this season and we know ourselves that we didn’t perform in that game but we obviously know that we’re the underdogs.

“There’s no getting away from that, but it is the Scottish Cup and anything can happen.

“That’s what we proved in the last round and hopefully we can do it again on Saturday.”
