Browns sign 2 to active roster and 3 to practice squad ahead of Week 10

The Cleveland Browns made a flurry of roster moves this week.

Offensive tackle Geron Christian and wideout James Proche were promoted to the active roster, while receiver Trinity Benson, safety Vincent Gray and offensive lineman Justin Murray were all signed to the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday. Cleveland also released tight end Devin Asiasi from the practice squad in a corresponding transaction.

The Browns also officially placed offensive tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. (knee) and cornerback Cameron Mitchell (hamstring) on injured reserve. They’ll both be out for at least four weeks.

Here’s a quick breakdown of every move.

Offensive tackle Geron Christian, a former third-round pick by the Washington Commanders in 2018, spent his first three seasons in Washington before brief stints with the Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins.

He started eight games for the Commanders from 2019-2020 and eight for the Texans in 2021. Christian played 33 snaps for the Texans in Week 1 of this season. He signed with the Browns practice squad on Oct. 31.

WR James Proche promoted to active roster

This is the second time the Browns promoted wide receiver James Proche to the active roster after Cleveland signed him on Oct. 31. He played six offensive snaps and 10 special teams snaps in Week 9 against the Arizona Cardinals where he returned six punts for 55 yards.

Before that, Proche spent three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens after he was drafted in the sixth round out of SMU in 2020. He’s caught 25 career passes on 40 targets in 44 games for 278 yards and no touchdowns. Proche returned 27 other punts and two other kickoffs in his career.

WR Trinity Benson signed to practice squad

Receiver Trinity Benson went undrafted in 2019 and spent time with the Denver Broncos and Detroit Lions. He caught 10 passes for 103 yards in eight games for the Lions in 2021, but didn’t see any touches in his lone game for the Lions in 2022. Benson hasn’t seen the field yet in 2023.

S Vincent Gray signed to practice squad

Safety Vincent Gray is a second-year undrafted free agent out of Michigan who originally signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2022. He spent the 2023 offseason with the Los Angeles Rams but was waived before the season began.

OT Justin Murray signed to practice squad

Offensive tackle Justin Murray originally went undrafted in 2016 but has taken regular season snaps for the Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans. He also spent time on the practice squad of the Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cincinnati Bengals. Murray played a few special teams snaps for the Titans this season, including against the Browns in Week 4.

The last time Murray took meaningful snaps on the offensive line, though, was in 2021 for the Cardinals. Murray played 90 offensive snaps in the first three games of the season, including a start in Week 3. He suffered a season-ending back injury in that game and was released the following offseason. Murray also started 19 games for the Cardinals from 2019-2020.

Offensive tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. will miss at least the next four weeks while he recovers from a MCL sprain he sustained in Week 9. He had to be carted off the field in an air cast, but head coach Kevin Stefanski said Wills should return this season – although the earliest that could be is Week 13.

The Browns officially placed cornerback Cameron Mitchell on injured reserve Tuesday after he sustained a hamstring injury in Week 9. He’s played in all eight games this season but started this past week for the injured Greg Newsome II.

Mitchell tallied eight combined tackles and one pass break-up this season, his first in the NFL after the Browns drafted him in the fifth round.

TE Devin Asiasi released

Cleveland released tight end Devin Asiasi after six weeks with the team. Asiasi previously played for the Bengals and New England Patriots, where he caught four passes for 44 yards and one touchdown in 22 games.
