Browns send scouts to the podium to discuss draft picks

Normally the general manager will address the press after an NFL team wraps a day of the annual draft. The Browns did things a little different over the 2019 draft weekend.

After the team selected the largely unknown Drew Forbes in the sixth round, the Browns sent out scout Colton Chapple to handle the Q&A session. Chapple was the member of the scouting staff most responsible for evaluating Forbes at Southeast Missouri State.

That followed two other scouts, Josh Cox and Matt Donahoe, handling the team’s press duties after the selections of Austin Seibert and Mack Wilson earlier on Saturday. Director of collegiate scouting Steve Malin handled the Sheldrick Redwine presser.

All of the scouting staff members were forthright in their answers. They didn’t shy away from handling tougher questions.

Having the scouts themselves explain the picks provides a level of transparency and credibility that we in the media don’t normally expect in these sorts of press conferences. It’s a welcome change, one incredibly well-received by the professional draft media.
