Browns reduce roster to 80: Waive 2, 3 to injured reserve

The Cleveland Browns were a day ahead with their roster moves last week and continue that trend today by trimming their roster to the required 80 players.

Today, the team reported the following players were placed on injured reserve, ending their seasons with the Browns:

TE Connor Davis (shoulder)
LB Montrel Meander (Achilles)
K Cody Parkey (quad)

Parkey was the biggest name as he was competing to return as the team’s starting kicker. Chase McLaughlin is the presumed favorite, as the only kicker on the roster, but Cleveland could look to bring in competition for him as well.

Meander left the Browns game with the New York Giants on a cart with an assumed significant injury. Just re-signed to the team during the week, Meander faces a tough road back from an Achilles injury.

Connor Davis was thought to be one of the players set to compete for the fourth tight end spot after Stephen Carlson was placed on the injured reserve last week. Instead, he also will miss the season.

The team also waived two players:

WR Alexander Hollins
*T Alex Taylor (ankle)
*injury designation

Hollins faced a tough road to making the team’s roster given the talent above him on the depth charts. Davion Davis’ breakout camp also pushed Hollins down even farther.

Taylor is a physically gifted prospect that needs a lot of work on fundamentals and could get looks from other teams around the league, or the Browns, for the practice squad.

Last week, Cleveland placed Carlson and Ryan Switzer on injured reserve and waived Cordel Iwuagwu, Kondre Thomas and Meander to get down to 85. The roster now sits at 80 but, with injuries ravaging the defense, could see multiple moves over the next couple of days still.
