Browns OC Todd Monken praises Baker Mayfield: ‘He wants to be coached’

Baker Mayfield knows how to have fun and keep his teammates on their toes with his sense of humor and energy, but don’t mistake that for a lack of seriousness. Just ask new Browns offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

Monken has come away very impressed with the second-year QB in their first few days working together in OTAs.

“You can certainly see the competitive spirit,’’ Monken said this week during OTAs. “He likes having fun. The best way I can put it is he likes to have fun but he’s not a clown. I think people misconstrue how much he likes having fun playing the game and around people.”

Monken continued: “I’m telling you, when you’re in the meetings and you’re out here, he wants to be coached, he wants to be great and he’s a serious guy when it comes to the game of football.”

It’s good to hear the coaching staff being accepting of Mayfield’s playful personality and particular set of skills. He and Monken have similar offensive backgrounds as descendants from the Air Raid offenses. That should help Mayfield quickly adapt to Monken’s offense. With his work ethic going back to Oklahoma, there is little worry Mayfield won’t be able to handle it.
