Though things haven’t been great since the Cleveland Browns returned in 1999. Before that, however, the team had a rich history of winning and talented players. The Browns have sent 18 players to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including running back Jim Brown, which ranks 10th all-time. They will also add a 19th member this summer when left tackle Joe Thomas is inducted into the Hall.
There are plenty of players to choose from when making a Mount Rushmore of the four most influential players in team history. It was a tough decision when looking at players like Clay Matthews and Bernie Kosar, who had great careers and just missed the cut. Let’s take a look at the Mount Rushmore, Browns edition.
Otto Graham, Quarterback
It’s hard to argue against Otto Graham on this list as one of the most impressive winning records for Graham. He played in a total of 10 seasons for the team reaching the championship game in every season he played and winning seven of those seasons. Graham was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965 and would go on to be a coach for Washington Commanders (Redskins at the time) from 1966 until 1968.
Jim Brown, Running back
Jim Brown firmly belongs on this list as many believe he is the best running back if not the best player in league history. Currently, the Hall of Famer ranks 11th in all-time rushing yards with 12,312 yards despite the seasons being much shorter during his time. Half of his career was played when the seasons only had 12 games making what he accomplished even more impressive.
Joe Thomas, Offensive tackle
Joe Thomas will be inducted into the Hall of Fame later this summer as one of the greatest left tackles in league history. Thomas was the only thing going for the team for the better part of a decade. Even when the team had so many issues Thomas was always a pillar of excellence and refused to leave Cleveland even when he had a chance. His 10,363 consecutive snap record is one that may never be broken.
Myles Garrett, Defensive end
Myles Garrett has had a great career so far and still hasn’t reached age 30 yet. He holds both the single-season sack record (16) as well as the all-time leading sack record for the Browns (74.5). Just like Joe Thomas, Garrett has been one of the few things the team has had going for them at times. With some added talent around Garrett for 2023 he has a great chance to build on an already great career.
