Browns host visit for small-school standout LB J.T. Hassell

Browns GM John Dorsey and his scouting staff are turning over every rock in search of talent. One of the latest quests features Florida Tech linebacker/safety J.T. Hassell, who is in Cleveland on Friday for a visit with the Browns.

Hassell is a 5-11, 200-pound dynamo at the D-II level for the Panthers. He’s a transfer from South Dakota State, where he started as a freshman. Hassell really found his home at Florida Tech, leading his conference in solo tackles and forced fumbles as a senior.

His size is an issue. His athletic ability is not, however. Hassell’s pro day numbers are fantastic, including a 4.38 40-yard dash, a 42-inch vertical and a 6.84 in the 3-cone drill. He also stood out at the Tropical Bowl in January.

Those workout numbers are great for a safety and off the charts for a linebacker. Hassell would project in the Derrick Kindred role with an emphasis on special teams, likely as an undrafted free agent.
