Browns' Garrett limps away from minicamp practice after injuring foot

BEREA, Ohio _ No. 1 overall draft pick Myles Garrett crashed to the ground in a heap Wednesday when he suffered a left foot injury during the second day of the Browns' mandatory minicamp.

Browns coach Hue Jackson said after practice he didn't know the severity of the injury.

"That's part of the game," Jackson said. "Obviously, I don't want to get any of our players nicked, hurt, any of that. But hopefully things will be fine. We don't want to lose any player, especially not one of our really good players. But hopefully things will be OK, and I think they will be. I don't know that for sure, but we'll find out as I go inside (the team's training facility)."

Garrett lined up at right defensive end with the second-team defense during an 11-on-11 drill late in practice and quickly rushed into the backfield. As he ran toward quarterback Brock Osweiler for a virtual sack, the rookie fell and immediately grabbed the bottom of his left foot.

Garrett spent a moment on the ground before being helped up. He limped to the sideline with head athletic trainer Joe Sheehan, sat down and had his foot examined. After being checked, Garrett rose and walked around on the sideline. Then he knelt and watched practice. Several teammates approached him to offer encouragement. Later, he stood on the sideline.

Jackson said he thought it was "a good sign" Garrett didn't leave the field with Sheehan to be immediately examined inside team headquarters.

Garrett had been limited in organized team activities earlier this spring reportedly because of sore foot suffered in rookie minicamp.

Asked if the injury Garrett suffered Wednesday was related to the issue that sidelined him for part of OTAs, Jackson said, "I don't know that for sure."

A thunderstorm approached team headquarters and caused a siren to sound with three plays left on Jackson's script. As the players jogged into the field house next to the practice fields, Garrett limped slowly behind them. He was the last player to reach the field house. Instead of running the final three plays, Jackson ended the practice once the players were indoors.

Garrett, who signed his four-year, $30.4 million rookie contract last month, dealt with injuries throughout his career at Texas A&M.

He suffered a broken hand three years ago but still set the Southeastern Conference record for sacks by a freshman with 11.5. He wore a cast in games and later had surgery. Last season, he missed two games with a left high-ankle sprain and played with the injury for the second half of last season.

The Browns will wrap up minicamp Thursday and take a break until training camp starts in late July. It looks as if Garrett will need the time to heal.
