Browns cut Jermaine Whitehead after violent, racist Twitter threats

The Cleveland Browns waived safety Jermaine Whitehead on Monday morning in the wake of a series of profane, racist, threatening tweets directed at fans and reporters.

Whitehead went off after the team’s loss to the Denver Broncos, inviting several fans to come find him and experience various violent acts. He used racial slurs and profanely attacked a Cleveland radio reporter before Twitter suspended his account for violating its terms of service.

He has started at safety in all eight games. Whitehead badly missed a tackle on Denver’s first touchdown, a pass to tight end Noah Fant where Whitehead dived meekly at his feet and did not even try to use his arms to make the tackle attempt. That drew the initial scorn on Twitter, which he responded to while still in uniform in the locker room after the game.

Whitehead had been with the Browns since the middle of the 2018 season. His year ends with 41 tackles and one forced fumble.
