CLEVELAND _ Freddie Kitchens will continue to do what got him the head coaching job of the Browns _ call the offense's plays.
Despite hiring Todd Monken as his offensive coordinator, Kitchens announced Monday during his introductory news conference he'll command the offense on game days and expressed confidence he's ready to succeed as a head coach after serving as a first-time play caller for the final eight games of the 2018 regular season.
"I believe that they made the best decision," Kitchens said of the Browns hiring him, "and I believe that they believe they made the best decision.
"They had confidence enough in me that I would figure it out (as a first-time head coach) and I'd get the job done. And I promise you this: I won't let them down."
Kitchens proved to be instrumental in the Browns going 5-3 in the final half of the season to finish 7-8-1 a year after they went 0-16.
But he's not satisfied.
"It drives me crazy that people are happy with 7-8-1, and if I was in a different setting, my vocabulary would demonstrate that," Kitchens said. "That's not acceptable. Nobody here wants that. We understand that was an improvement, but under no circumstance is that ever going to be acceptable. We only have one goal here, and that's the hoist the Lombardi Trophy."
