Browns claim DB Montrel Meander off waivers from the Jets

Welcome back to Cleveland, Montrel Meander! You’re once again the newest member of the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns claimed the defensive back off waivers from the New York Jets. He was waived on Tuesday when that team signed Derrick Kindred, a former Browns starting safety who was dumped by the Colts. The circle of NFL life…

If Meander sounds familiar, he should. He was with the Browns during the last offseason and spent most of the 2018 campaign on the team’s practice squad. Meander came to the Browns as an undrafted free agent from Grambling State, where he played quarterback before switching to defensive back.

At 6-2 and 215 pounds, he’s a big presence in the secondary. Meander has played both cornerback and safety in his NFL stint.

To make room for Meander, the team placed rookie wide receiver D.J. Montgomery on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Montgomery had played well in camp and preseason.
