Browns center JC Tretter elected president of NFLPA

Browns center JC Tretter is the new president of the NFL Players Association.

The union announced Tuesday on Twitter its board of player representatives elected Tretter to the prominent position. His two-year term began immediately.

"It's an honor to be in this position to lead our player membership," Tretter said in a news release. "This is what I'm passionate about, and I'm excited to fight to protect and advance the rights of all players, past, present and future."

Tretter was among four players who were nominated for president. The others were Russell Okung of the Carolina Panthers, Michael Thomas of the New York Giants and Sam Acho of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but NFL Network reported Okung declined his nomination and expressed support for Thomas.

Last week, Tretter wrote and released a detailed breakdown of the proposed new collective bargaining agreement to inform fellow players as they vote on whether to accept it. The deadline for voting is 11:59 p.m. Saturday.

Tretter graduated from Cornell University with a degree in industrial and labor relations. He was an alternate player representative for the Browns with the NFLPA the past two years.

Tretter, 29, succeeds former offensive tackle Eric Winston as NFLPA president. Winston had been in the role since 2014.

"It was an honor to serve the men of the NFL for the past 6 years as their President," Winston wrote on Twitter. "I know @jctretter will carry on a long tradition of devoted servants in protecting the men of our union past, present and future."
