AFL insiders have apparently reminded guests of the upcoming Brownlow Medal Awards that the event is about celebrating the sport, not about “who has the hottest girlfriend”.
The annual sporting ceremony — which recognises the best and fairest AFL players of the season — is set to take place on September 22, but the event has long doubled as a deserved showcase of the attendees’ wives and girlfriends (who almost always outdo their partners’ red carpet looks).
While some of us are just as invested in who’s bringing who and what gown they might wear (remember Annalise Dalins’ 2024 look?), this year’s guests have reportedly been told that the Brownlow Medals are not a fashion show — so consider the party well and truly pooped.

That’s according to the Herald Sun, which heard from a source that the AFL has put its foot down by saying the event is about “who is the fairest and best player in the competition as opposed to who has the hottest girlfriend”.
The same source said the ceremony is “not a beauty competition”.
The publication also reported that the AFL’s priority focus on just the players, and not their supportive partners, has meant a few staple Brownlow red carpet-goers might be snubbed from this year’s event.
Paris Bishop, for example, has topped many best-dressed lists of Brownlow’s past, but reportedly might not be invited this year as her partner, Essendon player Sam Durham, is not eligible for the awards after being suspended in Round 13.

The reports of this reminder about wives and girlfriends remain unconfirmed, but they come at a time when the AFL is witnessing one of its splashiest romances in the form of Bailey Smith and Tammy Hembrow.
ICYMI, the Geelong Cats player and influencer have been romantically linked since early August, with a joint Brownlow appearance seeming like the natural next step after multiple sightings in public and a soft launch on Instagram.
Their rumoured relationship would certainly turn heads on the red carpet, but while Smith is considered a contender for the Brownlow’s top gong — known as the ‘Charlie’ — it’s not yet known whether he’ll bring Hembrow along for the ride.

If she does attend, I say she has permission to strut her stuff, regardless of what AFL insiders say!
