'Brown water' that 'smells like eggs' coming out of taps

People in Liverpool have been complaining about the strange smell of the water coming from their taps.

Several people in the Speke area have posted saying their running water "smells like eggs" while others say it "smells like gas".

One woman took to a community page on Facebook after noticing a strange odour coming from the water as she was about to take a shower.

She posted: “Really random but has anyone smelt their water lately?

“I've just gone to get a shower and the water smells really off and I've been giving the kids juice with it all day but I've realised it's the water both upstairs and downstairs never had a problem before though”.

In another post, she said she was having to buy bottled water because the smell was “just awful”.

In response to the post, a woman commented confirming her own water supply smelled like “gas” for the past few days, saying she even turned the gas off in her house to make sure it wasn’t coming from there.

Several others then commented to say they too had noticed a strange smell coming from the water, and one said their water had come out with a ‘brown tinge’.

Another woman posted saying that hers “smells like egg”.

The comments about the strange smelling water come days after the ECHO reported that people in several parts of Merseyside reported yellow water coming from their kitchen and bathroom taps.

United Utilities confirmed the yellow water was caused by a burst water main on Satinwood Crescent affecting customers in Liverpool.

They acknowledged while the water didn’t look nice, it was unlikely to be harmful and suggested people let their cold tap run at a slight trickle until it runs clear again.

The water company later confirmed that the burst drain had been repaired.

The ECHO approached United Utilities about the strange smelling water but they said they had not received any complaints from residents from the Speke area about it.

They added if there are any customers experiencing a strange colour or smell to their water supply to get in contact with them.
